i’ve always wanted to be able to type by talking to my machine, read laptop
recently i have jumped back on the bus to automated life, and started exploring. i’ll share some of the facts, and findings:
- the best voice recognition software on the market used to me made by a company called scansoft.
- be very sceptical of the word best, any voice recognition software has to be trained. by you. like a monkey. yes.
- the company that owns the best voice recognition software currently is called Apple
- that same software (Dragon) is available on the iPhone for free to users in the USA. why Steve, why?
- seems that there is a part of the universe called google answers. it also appears that emotional men who know about systems, IT systems, go there. to find answers. all in a 1987 typeface.
- it appears that websites are not particularly good at maintaining their pages. this particular link was meant to be of a review in the PC Mag, an online magazine. How is it then, that a small paper – The Atlantic Monthly – still has cobwebs in it’s cloud.
- The article from the Atlantic Monthly is great
- url graveyards are everywhere, even i’ve killed a website
finally, i’ll leave you with the specifications that apple has on it’s text to speech software.
Braille
VoiceOver is the first screen reader to provide true plug-and-play support for braille displays. It includes software drivers for over 40 USB and wireless braille displays, so they start working instantly when you connect them. But that’s not all. Through a unique feature called braille mirroring, VoiceOver is the only screen reader that supports more than one braille device at a time — up to 32 braille displays connected simultaneously to the same computer. This enables you to share what you’re working on with others who read braille, just as sited users can share their computer screen using a video projector.
